How much can a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tow in San Antonio heat?

A Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tows up to 13,300 lbs when it is properly equipped, according to Chevrolet. For a San Antonio summer, plan your trailer well under that top figure and match the truck’s equipment to your load before you buy.

We are Group 1 Chevrolet Northwest, on Interstate 10 West between Loop 1604 and the Medical Center. Most of the San Antonio buyers we meet tow on weekends and commute on weekdays, and the same truck has to do both.

Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive in San Antonio. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.

In San Antonio, size your trailer well under the 13,300 lb maximum

Chevrolet rates the Silverado 1500 at up to 13,300 lbs of towing when it is properly equipped. That is the top of the line, and a San Antonio buyer who tows in July should treat it as a ceiling to stay under.

The word that matters is “properly.” The 13,300 lb figure belongs to a properly equipped truck, and not every Silverado 1500 on a lot carries that equipment. The 2026 line spans nine trims, and engines run from 305 hp to 420 hp. Two trucks with the same badge can tow very different loads.

So start with the trailer. Get the loaded weight of what you plan to pull, including water, gear, and anything in the bed or cab. Then ask for the towing rating of the exact truck you are looking at. If your trailer sits close to that rating, move up to a truck with more room. Do not squeeze the load in.

Summer in San Antonio is the season to keep slack in every number. A trip that feels fine in March is a longer day in August. A truck rated well above your trailer gives you margin on the day you need it most.

We read the equipment list with you at Group 1 Chevrolet Northwest. We would rather you leave with a truck rated above your trailer than with one that only just clears it.

San Antonio traffic on Interstate 10 makes the diesel’s 21 to 25 mpg count

Most of your miles in a Silverado 1500 will be unloaded, and fuel economy decides what those miles cost. EPA combined ratings run 15 to 20 mpg for gasoline versions and 21 to 25 mpg for diesel versions. The flex fuel version is rated 17 mpg combined.

Look at how those ranges sit side by side. The lowest diesel figure, 21, is higher than the highest gasoline figure, 20. A buyer who drives a long commute and tows a few weekends a year can still come out ahead on the diesel.

Traffic raises the stakes. The Texas A&M Transportation Institute puts the San Antonio urban area at 48 annual person-hours of delay per commuter in 2024, up from 46 hours the year before (Texas A&M Transportation Institute, 2024). Slow miles on Interstate 10 and Loop 1604 are where a thirsty truck costs you.

If you live on the northwest side and your drive runs through the Medical Center, you know this stretch. A gas truck is a fair choice when towing is rare and the trailer is light. When you tow often, or you drive far every day, the diesel numbers deserve a hard look.

Wet-weather towing is a San Antonio concern, and margin is what protects you

San Antonio is a dry place most of the year, but it is not a place without storms. San Antonio’s normal annual precipitation is 32.38 inches, and its normal annual snowfall is 0.2 inches (NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, 2020). Snow will almost never be your problem. Summer heat and sudden heavy rain will.

The recent record shows it. FEMA declared a federal emergency for Texas flooding on July 18, 2026, and Bexar County is one of the designated areas (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2026). A road that is dry at noon can look very different by evening.

A loaded trailer asks for more room to stop on wet pavement. That is one more reason to buy a truck rated above your trailer. A truck working at its limit has little left when a storm hits. A truck working well under its limit does.

We give the same plain advice to every towing buyer in San Antonio. Slow down when the rain starts. Leave extra distance. Never drive into water over a roadway. No rating on a spec sheet covers that decision.

Six figures sort a San Antonio tow buyer from a commuter

The Silverado 1500 numbers split into two groups. Some decide how much you can pull, and others decide what the truck costs you every week. Each row below belongs to the 2026 Silverado 1500 line, and a range spans the trims.

Figure Silverado 1500 What it settles in San Antonio
Maximum towing, properly equipped 13,300 lbs The heaviest trailer Chevrolet rates; stay under it in summer
Horsepower 305 hp to 420 hp Spans every trim, so check the exact truck’s engine
EPA combined mpg, gasoline 15 to 20 The weekday fuel cost of a gasoline truck on Interstate 10
EPA combined mpg, diesel 21 to 25 The lowest diesel figure beats the highest gasoline figure
Maximum cargo 89.1 cu ft Room for weekend gear before the trailer is hitched
MSRP $36,900 to $71,800 Nine trims, with the WT the lowest

A weekend camper or boat buyer reads the first two rows. A commuter who tows now and then reads the mpg rows. A family that hauls gear in the bed reads the cargo row. Every buyer reads the last row last.

That is the order we suggest. Settle the trailer first, then the engine, then the fuel bill, then the budget. Picking a trim before you know your trailer weight leads to buying twice.

A Silverado 1500 starts at $36,900 MSRP, and Texas adds fees on top

Chevrolet’s suggested prices for the 2026 Silverado 1500 run from $36,900 for the WT to $71,800 across nine trims. These are the manufacturer’s suggested prices, and they are not our prices. What you pay depends on the truck you choose and the deal on that truck.

Texas adds its own charges on top. The TxDMV charges a processing and handling fee of $4.75, and the local fee set by your county of registration may range from $0 to $31.50, made up of a county road and bridge fee of up to $10, a transportation fee not to exceed $20 in certain counties, and a child safety fee of up to $1.50 (Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, 2026). Bexar County buyers should confirm the county amount at registration.

Texas has also dropped the safety inspection for most cars and trucks. Non-commercial vehicles in Texas are still subject to a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee collected at registration. A new vehicle of the current or preceding model year that has not been registered pays an initial fee of $16.75 to cover two years (Texas Department of Public Safety, 2026).

Then comes the dealer documentary fee. Texas does not set a hard dollar cap on it. A seller does not have to file a notification or cost analysis before charging $225 or less, but must file both before charging more (Texas Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner, 2024). Ask any dealer for that line item in writing before you sign.

A truck that tows works harder than one that commutes, so the warranty matters. Chevrolet’s basic warranty on the Silverado 1500 runs three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The powertrain warranty is typically five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 1500 pull 10,000 lbs?

Chevrolet rates the Silverado 1500 at up to 13,300 lbs when properly equipped, so 10,000 lbs sits under the top rating. Whether a specific truck can do it depends on its trim and equipment. Ask us for the towing rating of the exact truck before you commit.

Is a Chevy Silverado 1500 good for towing?

It is built for it. The line carries a 13,300 lb maximum towing rating when properly equipped, and horsepower runs from 305 hp to 420 hp across the trims. The powertrain warranty is typically five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

How much cargo room does a Silverado 1500 have?

Maximum cargo is 89.1 cubic feet. That is the space you have for tools, coolers, and camping gear before you hitch a trailer. Many San Antonio weekend buyers load the bed first and then check the trailer weight.

How long does the Silverado 1500 warranty last?

The basic warranty is three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The powertrain warranty is typically five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Tow-heavy owners put on miles quickly, so the mileage limit is worth watching.

Can I trade in my current truck when I buy a Silverado 1500?

Yes. You can trade in or sell your car with a free offer that arrives in minutes. Many San Antonio buyers get that number first so they know what they have to put toward the next truck.

Does Group 1 Chevrolet Northwest offer lease and finance deals?

Our Chevrolet offers include lease deals and finance deals. The right choice depends on how long you plan to keep the truck and how much you tow. We walk through both with you so you see them side by side.

Can you check my truck before a summer tow?

Yes. Our Certified Service experts offer a multi-point vehicle inspection. You can book through our online service appointment form, linked from our home page and our service page.

San Antonio buyers can tow up to 13,300 lbs with a properly equipped Silverado 1500

A Silverado 1500 answers the question when the truck is equipped for the trailer and the trailer sits well under the rating. The weekend camper or boat buyer in San Antonio should pick the truck by the trailer first. The daily commuter on Interstate 10 should look hard at the diesel’s mileage. Every buyer should leave room in the rating for a San Antonio summer. We are the place to make that decision because we sit on the northwest corridor, we know the Chevrolet lineup, and our service department stays with you long after the sale.
